BELFAST BOY
NOTHINGS EVER EASY
Nothings ever easy nothings ever sure
Nothings ever simple and nothings ever clear
You look into a mirror tell me what you see
Is it your own reflection looking back at you
Drop a stone in water see the ripples flow
They start from the centre and then they'll go
There's heat in a desert think you see a tree
But it's just an illusion making a fool of me
And when you're dreaming it all seems so real
Then you are awoken to face you're own fear
And then there's children playing a silly game
Seems like only yesterday that they were calling your name

RIDE ON
(My very different version of the Jimmy McCarthy song made famous by the great Christy Moore)

BELFAST BOY
There's a voice in my memory I used to recall
When I was not a tall man I was very very small
When ma was mum and da was dad and I was just a kid
They always did their best for me but I never did as bid
But I still remember as a Belfast boy
How I used to run around thro every part of town
I still remember as a Belfast boy
I still remember
Well I am I am I am a Belfast boy
I'd wear those short trousers to the school just down the street
And in behind the bike shed my friends and I would meet
We'd check the size of willies and swap our homework round
I took me a fancy for a girl from the other side of town
Up to the grammar school at the top of the hill
All the boys were protestant mostly called Bill
And the boys from the other school were Paddy, Mick and Joe
They all looked the same to me but who am I to know
And when I was married to a Dublin girl I know
Me a prod and her a mick our love was all on show
And the children of that marriage neither orange or green
They're just our lovely children hope you know just what I mean

ROADSIDE FLOWERS
They died in a tunnel in Paris the paparazzi chasing on
The princess of England and her lover France brought roadside flowers
But sure they're only roadside flowers left with a feeling that you could touch
But to her and him they meant everything beautiful roadside flowers
On one evening in December in Scotland a Panam exploded in the sky
Two hundred and fifty nine and eleven on the ground
Lockerbie brought roadside flowers
In Estonia it was raining very heavy but he could ride anything that had wheels
The king of the roads had one race to far Ballymoney brought roadside flowers
Well the USA won't ever be the same hijackers waiting on some planes
They took their own lives and many more besides America brought roadside flowers
Beautiful flowers, beautiful flowers
Withering roadside flowers

SECRET TO YOUR HEART
Someday you're gonna be mine babe
And someday soon I'm gonna take up all your time
Until that time comes around I'll be patient until I can find
That secret to your heart that secret to your heart
I see you every day walking up and down my street
But I never had the courage for us to meet
Sitting with my friends in a local café
Well you just walked right in and asked is it ok if I just stay
Now my time has arrived I'm so lucky just to be alive
With that secret to your heart with that secret to your heart
I walked you home later that same night you kissed me full on the lips and it just felt so right
Now our hearts are one my searching's it's over and done
Got that secret to your heart I got that secret to your heart
So all you people out there looking for a love match
Cast your net so wide you never know what you might just catch
Then you can be free to explore all and you'll see
You've got that secret to her heart etc

SUPERMARKET WINE
(I've always wanted to cover this great song by Mickey McConnell. I suppose memories of wine, cheese and things Irish with lost love covers it)

ELEVATOR LADY
I see you every morning you're always going up
You smile at all the customers but I'm always out of luck
To see my elevator lady to see my elevator lady
I love my elevator lady she sure do brighten up my day
I like your lovely uniform it really suits your style
Why don't you bring them both to my part of town
When tea break comes around I'm always right on time
I get me a coke and a sandwich around about half past nine
You're pushing all those buttons standing on that spot
When lunchtime comes around my curries always hot
I'm a man of modest principles and I like to work up schemes
I'll have to wake up soon cause she's messing with all my dreams
I talked to the maintenance man made him fix it right
He fixed it so dam well that I had to spend the night

HUNGRY KISSES
Hungry kisses hungry kisses I ain't got nothing for you but hungry kisses
You bring out a passion I thought had gone
You show me a longing in a feeling so strong
And when you leave me your kiss remains
Until you return again it wards of the pain
After a while I thought they would go
But they are still with me as our love grows
Why am I so lucky what did I do right
You lie here beside me every single night
You gave me a daughter you gave me a son
There light is still a shining for everyone
Give us hungry kisses hungry kisses
They ain't got nothing for us but hungry kisses
I love hungry kisses hungry kisses
I've got everything and hungry kisses

DEAD EYED JIM
He rode into town with a mission on his mind
To blow away the man who'd been messing him around
He got of his horse and he was all dressed in black
And everyone that seen him sure they never turned their backs
He's just a gunfighter back in town again
The people who knew him well were all down a'praying
Someone's gonna die tonight and it ain't gonna be him
Because he had a reputation dead eyed Jim
The saloon doors swung open and he walked straight inside
The man that he was looking for had a woman by his side
The music stopped when the people seen there was a deadly hush
They all hid behind the bar in the panic and the rush
Jim called him out and said put your aces down
Have yourself one last drink your time has come around
Before I leave this bar tonight its gonna be you or me
And I don't care what the people say it is our destiny
The gambler he stood up with the lady at his arm
He had no aces in his hand no tricks nor manly charms
Smoke filled the air because the gambler he had pride
And dead eyed Jim blew him away it was the night the gambler died
The undertaker was the only one around
Pleased to see dead eyed Jim when he'd come into town
When Jim came you know the bullets they would fly
And he would get to make a box because some poor cowboy died

MISS YOU WHILE YOU SLEEP
I'd walk you home from school we'd broken all those rules
You were very good in class and always did my maths
I'd carry your books they gave us strange looks
We were too much together to realise
But I'll miss you while you sleep I know our love will keep
Until the morning sun brings up a brand new dawn
Another journey another road to take
I knew the road to travel and investigate
Wedding bells will chime now I know that you are mine
With children of our own we'd build a happy home
I never had another love I wanted only you
True hearts and lovers it was our destiny
Now we're old and grey more grandchildren on the way
We're slowing down at last remembering all our past
The circles come around another life we've found
Our beacon is still strong and it's lasting oh so long
Now that I'm alone and I'm thinking of you now
I never will regret the first time that we met
Ponytails and schoolyards a family and a home
You're on that last journey now our time has flown

OLD FLAMES
Linda threw stones at my windowpane she wanted me to play her mating game
But I was far too busy with my exams
I took her to the bushes in the park and I gave her kisses in the dark
And I escaped home in one piece. Linda went do dah do
Nancy followed me home from school used to steal her apples as a golden rule
And I always well I carried her books
I met her on a bus on the Ravenhill road for a wee small lad I was awful bold
She said I'll pay you're fare. Nancy went do dah do
I took Helen riding on my bike never got her home before midnight
Her father always chased me up the road
We sat in front of a sunhouse fire kissing and a cuddling till the wee small hours
I was always tired next day. Helen went do dah do
Maggy was a teacher in Newcastle town always laughing and a running me down
Always saying she fancied someone else
She tried to get me of with her friend the two of them put me round the bend
I said I'm better of all alone. Maggy went do dah do
Elaine was a Dublin lass hit me like some lightning flash
Ended up the only ex I ever had
But I loved her in those Wicklow days though we went our separate ways
I wish her nothing but the best. Elaine went do dah do
Some of them I loved so well some of them told me to go to hell
But I remember each and every one
They're all in my memory like some lasting liturgy
They're all old flames of mine. Old flames do dah do etc

JUST ANOTHER LOVE SONG
I can write you a love song it's just for you
And I can write you a love song to break you in two
I can write you a love song with all different ends
But maybe a love song can sometimes come true
It won't be the first one and it won't be the last
Many poets have written them down in the past
So why should I worry and why should I fear
What can I hope for you'll remember me here
Where do they come from I suppose from the heart
It's really so silly they're usually falling apart
So why do we do this and write with the pen
They tug at our heartstrings again and again
So it's just another love song with my name at the top
Just another love song I hope you like it a lot
It's just another love song to add to the list
But if you've never loved you'll never know what you missed
I can sing you my love song and it's just for you
And I can sing you my love song to break you in two
I can sing you my love song with all different ends
But maybe a love song can sometimes come true

WEEKEND IN PARIS
Booked it for a surprise to see that starlight in your eyes
To enlighten those loving flames and play those loving games
Left on a Friday I had a table reserved
Some champagne and roses everything was so right
For a weekend in Paris just you and me
Two Irish lovers walked the Champs Elysées
Into a hotel down by the Seine
Made love on a four poster and you called my name
A time for just us before that break of day
No one can find us we're hidden away
Weekend in Paris sure it's over now we're flying oe'r the Eiffel
Still flying so high
Weekend in Paris will always remain inside our memories
Awakened old flames
